South Florida Pediatric Occupational Therapist -
Mary Cunningham, MOT OTR/L
Mary C. Cunningham-Portner is a licensed South Florida Pediatric Occupational Therapist practicing since 2004 and has a passion for children and a vision for successful multidimensional rehabilitation. She graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Master’s of Occupational Therapy in 2004 and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 2002. In 1990, she received an Associate of Arts in Language at Corning Community College, NY.
She completed her first rotation at Mt Sinai Hospital of Miami where she gathered multiple skills and tools with orthopedic care, cardiac rehabilitation, and neurological development techniques in regards to traumatic brain injury and stroke related incidences. Mary was invited to complete her second rotation at the Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center. During this clinical internship Mary was provided with a variety of developmental, neurological and psychological interventions addressing patient as well as family care needs and group therapy. In addition to the clinical skills, Mary has worked in a variety of home based children’s programs with concentration in Verbal Behavior, Floor Time and Discrete Trials / Applied Behavior Analysis.
As, the former Camp Coordinator for Miami Children’s Hospital Dan Marino Center (2006 & 2007) she developed a summer program that provided special needs children with therapeutic interventions including Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Behavior Therapy and much more. For her great success in serving special needs children and families she earned an Employee Recognition Award in 2007 and 2006. In 2006, she also earned recognition for the Camps Restructure.
Her certifications and training includes Is it Sensory or Is it Behavior?, Interactive Metronome, Physical Modalities, and Brain Gym 101 and Professional Crisis Management. Also, Mary has been the South Florida Tourette’s Support Group facilitator since 2006.
Mary understands the value of working with the parents and/or schools to implement a successful therapeutic program. She has worked with a diverse population of children and knows how to focus on individual needs. Mary’s holistic approach, naturalistic setting and multidisciplinary team approach has provided the best outcomes with occupational therapeutic intervention and functional independence.
